On July 8, 2009, cardio-thoracic surgeon Dr. Lyle Joyce performed open heart surgery on Dave at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN.

Before that surgery, Dave heard powerful words like "calcified aortic valve" and "heart failure" that threatened to put his life on hold.

While preparing for surgery and in recovery, Dave heard other more powerful words which gave him hope and the ability to laugh amid the crisis.

Dave shares these words of hope in a special presentation designed for general audiences. All of us will eventually face a life crisis, whether medical, financial, legal, or personal. Gospel According to Chamula™

Dave's newest title These Words Changed Everything™ was released by STEMPress™ in October 2009. This non-fiction novel describes the dramatic and total transformation of thousands of Chamula Indians who read the Bible in their previously unwritten language.

Dave spent hundreds of hours interviewing linguists Ken and Elaine Jacobs, who devised a way to write Chamula-Tzotzil and then taught Chamulas to read their mother tongue. Over a period of 50 years, the Jacobs supervised the translation of both the New and the Old Testament into this Mayan dialect. The author traveled twice to southern Mexico to interview dozens of individual Chamulas ridiculed, jailed, beaten or raped, shot at and eventually kicked off their tribal land for following The Good New Words--this was what believing Chamulas called the Gospel of Jesus Christ. 

In a 30-40 minute talk called The Gospel According to Chamula, Dave tells the story of the Chamulas' encounter with the Bible and how it changed them. Then, using English back-translations of Chamulas' verbal definitions for Forgiveness, Faith, Hope and Love, the author paints a vivid picture of what North Americans can learn from their neighbors to the south. Those who've read Dave's book These Words Changed Everything will hear additional stories not found in the book. Whether or not you've read the book, you will benefit from the simple but powerful insights of Paxcu, Manuel, Vel, Maria and other real-life characters
